254 SMO is an austenitic stainless steel designed for superior pitting and crevice corrosion. 254 SMO is ideal for high-chloride environments because of its high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. 254 SMO is often used where 316L or 317L has failed. 254 SMO is significantly stronger than the common austenitic grades, and it is also characterized by high ductility and impact strength.
254 SMO is readily fabricated and welded. It is a strong, tough stainless steel. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code allows use of 254 SMO up to 750°F, with excellent strength levels. Applications for 254 SMO include: process equipment in the chemical industry, bleaching equipment in the pulp and paper industry, flue gas cleaning, desalination, seawater handling, and heat exchangers.
