A lock nut is a type of nut used to prevent loosening under extreme torque or vibration. Lock nuts can be manufactured in a hex / finished or heavy hex pattern and can be self-locking with a pin that prevents the nut from backing up the threads or use a nylon ring that grips the threads to lock the nut in place.
